Some Information about Rat Infestation

Rats are intelligent creatures and very friendly when tame and these features rather can make them as cute pets. Because domestic rats are less likely to bite than gerbils and hamsters, if your child is looking for a new pet, a domestic rat could be the family’s good choice. Wild rats though are never good once they infest your home aside from not being cute. When you sense and show signs that the rats and their families are starting to occupy your outbuildings, garage, attic or basement, then you should already be concern.

There are two main types of rats and these are the black and brown rats, although they come in different sub-species. Coming from Asia are the so-called old world rats which are small, but their relatives found in your cities and towns are much bigger.

Just like humans, rats migrated around the world following soldiers and traders along trade routes between Asia and Europe. Rats were everywhere, hitching rides on ships, sailing between continents, and eventually you see them everywhere after a few centuries.

Just like many pests, rats are nature’s scavengers, and so the more food is available in a place, the more you will see them around. Rats prefer a diet of various meat and vegetables, but they are not choosy with their food, thus they will be satisfied raiding your trash or your vegetable patch. Be warned that rats will also attack smaller animals if they cannot find food in their areas.

Rats have one main reason for being dreaded or scared of in the past centuries and this is because they spread disease. A disease in the past called the black death or the bubonic plague, was transmitted by rats which were infested with fleas, and because of this 25 million people perished in the Middle Ages.

Nowadays, an outbreak of the disease can be prevented since we have now a better understanding of the disease and how to prevent it. Rats today can do spread disease still, and thus we have to act immediately to avoid infestation.

If you see rats living and breeding your surroundings, you should be concern of this condition since rat-borne disease called leptospirosis is the most common to occur.
Salmonella is another disease that you can obtain if you consume water or food that are contaminated by rats. If people are exposed to rat droppings or rat urine, they can be contaminated with the disease called hantavirus, and also this disease can be transmitted through rat bite. Another disease is called e-coli which is a very common infestation among the rat population and contaminated water and food could be a source of infection among humans.
